Tops Tips for a Concert/Eisteddfod Event

Eisteddfods are fun and can be a great way to add extra skills and expertise to your dance repertoire.

Plan Ahead
Make a bag filled with all the basics you will need for the concert/Eisteddfod, including extra tights, dance shoes, costumes, make up and any hair accessories.

A few extra bits for the bag:
  • Some clear bandaids/plasters in case of a blister
  • A hanger in case you have a costume change, you can hang up your other costumes to keep it free from wrinkles.
  • Small bag of babywipes – great for getting rid of last minute make up stains on costumes!
  • Clear Nail Polish for those unexpected runs in your tights. Dab a little on a run as soon as you see it and that can stop it getting bigger.
  • Safety pins for last minute costume malfunctions

REMEMBER to label everything that goes into the bag! Costumes/Uniforms, dance shoes  etc. in a class are usually the same size and look the same so label label label!

Arrive a Bit Early
You need time to find out where your dance troupe/teacher or designated area is so arrive a bit early so as not to be rushing around at the last minute in a panic.

Bring Something for the Down Time
There may be times when your child has to sit quietly and wait for their turn on stage, so supply them with something for those times that allows them to sit quietly and play e.g. deck of cards. Don’t send food or anything (like textas that can mark their costume!)

Ways to help your child prepare
Practice at home a lot. Ask the teacher what the name of the song is that they are using and let your child practice at home. Your child will be far more confident on stage performing if they know their routine. Make sure they are well rested, concerts/Eisteddfods can be very tiring and a little more sleep will help them cope better with the whole experience.

How to make the perfect bun

A ballerina bun hairstyle might look complicated, but it's actually quite simple do achieve. As long as your hair is long enough to pull into a ponytail, making a bun should be easy. It may take a little practice but your hair will be ballet-ready in no time.

You will begin by combing out your hair, making sure to brush out any existing knots or tangles. Then, lightly dampen your hair by spritzing with a spray bottle of water or by smoothing down hair with wet hands or a comb. Make sure you hair is only slightly damp. You don't want it to be dripping because it will be slippery and hard to work with.

The next step is to brush all of your hair back. Using a hair brush, smooth the hair back neatly. Make sure there are no stray hairs in your face, as a ballerina needs to look neat and tidy.

Next, secure your hair tightly into a high ponytail using an elastic ponytail holder. You want the ponytail to be tight in order to finish with a tight bun, so wrap the elastic several times, depending on the thickness of your hair. Position the ponytail on your head wherever you want the finished bun to be located.

Now, using a brush or a comb, smooth all loose hairs of the ponytail. Grasp the ponytail with one hand and brush the hair with the other. The hair needs to be completely smooth in order to make a neat and tidy bun.

Next, twist the entire ponytail into a tight rope. You will need to use both hands for this step. Make sure all of your hair is included in the twist.

Now, start making your bun. Begin wrapping your hair rope tightly around the base of the ponytail. You'll want the twist to be tight against your head, so continue twisting your hair as you wrap it around

Now that your hair is twisted into a bun, tuck the ends into the ponytail base. You want your bun to look as neat as possible, so make sure you tuck in all of the loose ends

You are almost finished! The next step is to secure your bun with hair or bobby pins. Make sure to incorporate a bit of hair from the bun as well as your head into each hair pin. This will ensure the bun stays put while you are dancing. If your hair is extra thick or long, you will need to use several pins. Start at the top and make your way around, placing the pins all the way around the base of the bun

Now that your bun is in place, ensure that no stray hairs will escape as you dance. Sightly spray your bun and surrounding hair with hairspray to secure the hairstyle

Your ballerina bun is now complete. Your hair is neat and ready to withstand as much dancing as you need to do. Smile...you have made the perfect ballerina bun.
